Land buggies.

In science we have been learning about forces
and friction. We have been investigating water
and air resistance and began by testing various
boat hull shapes to see which were most streamlined.
In DT we designed and made our own land buggies
with sails. Making stable structures was extremely tricky
because some of our sails caused our buggies to topple
over. Therefore we had to adapt our designs. The other
problem that we faced was making sure that the wheel
axles didn't twist too much and cause our buggies to
swerve so some of us made spacers to keep the wheels
steady. We had to do a lot of thinking and problem solving
and have learnt a lot about what to consider if we want to
make another buggy in the future.

Seventies Day

Don't we look great in our 70s gear?

We learnt lots of games that our teachers played
when they were at school such as french skipping.

We also did lots of crafts that were popular in
the seventies. Soon photographs of our tie-dye
and cross stitch will be appearing so please come
back to take a look.

Making and testing balistas.

We learnt all about how the Roman Army was well trained
and organised. They used technology to help them defeat
their enemies, including catapults and balistas. We built our
own balistas from tetrahedron frames but binding the corners
was tricky.Eventually we managed through working together
and lots of perseverance. The fun part was a competition to
see how far we could fire paper balls.

Entertaining the elderly.

Each year we entertain the elderly
by visiting nursing homes, Queensmead sheltered housing and
Swanage Day Centre. They really enjoy our singing and we learn
respect for our community by chatting to the older generation.
This year we also invited Queensmead residents
to join us for our Christmas meal at our school.
After lunch our visitors enjoyed listening to Year 4 carol singers.

Christmas Maths

Boxes decorated using rotational symmetry.

More Christmas Maths

Any idea what we are making?

Careful use of a protractor to accurately measure angles.

Precise folding and marking to create a circle.
Some delicate cutting requires concentration.
Have you worked out what we're making yet?
These are some of our lovely snowflake cards with six lines of symmetry.

Physical Activity to Music Festival

We joined children from several other schools at Purbeck Sports Centre.
The audience enjoyed our bhangra dance and we certainly kept fit rehearsing.

Clues to the past

We used photographs of ancient artefacts to learn
about how the Romans lived. We discovered lots of
archeaological clues and labelled each picture with our ideas.
